Governor to declare state of emergency for West Nile Virus

After a strong request by Senator Dean Florez Wednesday, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has vowed to proclaim a state of emergency for counties hardest hit by the West Nile Virus.

The Governor's proclamation is expected sometime Thursday for Kern, Colusa, and San Joaquin counties, all of which have seen fatalities because of the virus.

This move will make emergency funding available to local Vector Control Districts, as well as direct state agencies to take a more active approach towards limiting any further spread of the West Nile Virus.

The Governor has also been in contact with the Director of the Department of Public Health to help determine the exact level of resources needed.

In response to the Governor's action, Senator Florez said he is "very encouraged by the Governor’s rapid response that he does grasp the serious nature of this threat to public health."
